First free zone for dogs in the country to be built in Niksic
The commencement of construction of a free zone for dogs in Studenacke Glavice, just a few kilometers from the Niksic city center, was officially announced on June 27th. The representatives of the Municipality of Niksic described this project, which is part of the first Local Plan for Dog Population Control, recently adopted by the local assembly.
The free zone will cover 20,000 square meters and will be able to accommodate far more dogs than the current municipal shelter for stray animals in Brestice, which will continue to operate.
In this process it is necessary to listen to the voices of experts, as well as citizens and volunteers who care for stray dogs in their local communities.
Therefore, it is necessary to listen to the voices of experts, as well as citizens and volunteers who care for stray dogs in their local communities. Every possible effort should be made to prevent beloved community dogs from being moved to the free zone in order to provide them better protection, only for the volunteers who cared for them to learn that the dogs have died there.
The ambition to claim that the streets have been cleared of several hundred dogs, thus allegedly solving the stray dog problem (which can only be solved by addressing the root causes), must not outweigh the need to protect the well-being of these animals that did not choose to be born on the streets or to be abandoned there without consequence.
